Whether it’s leftover Halloween candy or a cheeseburger, certain foods inevitably weaken your willpower. Here are 4 ways to help you resist temptation.
1) Eat on schedule
Eat meals and snacks at consistant times every day. Sticking to a regular eating schedule will make it easier to fend off the hunger that can cause you to overeat and lose your ability to make wise food choices. Be mindful of what you eat. Eat whole foods, with minimal ingredients, and if you can pronounce all of the items on the label, PUT IT DOWN!
2) Snacks
Always have a healthy snack(s) on hand to fend off running to the vending machine. Before grabbing for that cookie in the kitchen, or handful of chips, have a snack that will allow you to sustain energy, refocus your mind, and provide you with nutrients. Stash nuts, dried fruit, whole grain crackers, and fresh fruit in your workplace for easy access.
3) Stop
It takes your brain 20 minutes to register that your stomach is full. If you are wanting to reach for a second helping, wait and see if you are really still hungry. Also, by eating slowly, you can give yourself time to feel your fullness signals. You can take a 2-minute break midway through your meal if you’d like or you can simply eat slower.
4) Remove yourself
Researchers have found that people are better at controlling themselves when they remove themselves from the situation. Step away from the kitchen and read, take a bath, exercise, or call a friend.
