Know the Code

One way to spot organic produce in the store is to check out each food’s price look-up number, or PLU code. Coding is standardized for every grocery store in the country. Here’s the deal:

- Conventional (chemically grown):

  • 4 digit number and begin with a 3 or 4
  • Banana Example: 4011

- Organic:

  • 5 digit number and begin with a 9
  • Banana Example: 94011

- GMO (Genetically modified organism)

  • 5 digit number and begin with a 8
  • Banana Example: 84011
